Mara Lees, Celebrant

Over my lifetime, I have experience the loss of loved ones and close friends by illnesses and suicide. I have experienced the terrible fear when held hostage by bank robbers. Moving to British Columbia for a new life, I put the fear and that experience behind me. While working for the Federal Government, I was involved in a serious car crash that left me disabled. With the diagnosis, I would never be able to walk unassisted; I turned my anger and frustration into determination. Today I walk unassisted. Completing a one-year Graphic Arts course, I was also able to express my feelings of change through art. I then completed a certified course in Cross Cultural and Independent Counselling with the goal of helping those who had suffered trauma.

I was a volunteer member of the RCMP Victim Service Unit for many years. However, changing direction it has been a pleasure and a joy to bring couples together in the union of marriage. A community service as a Marriage Commissioner.
Over the years, I have written life stories for funerals and celebrations of life, celebrated couples renewing their wedding vows and written ceremonies for those who wished to express their commitment to each other.

I am excited to be a member and a colleague of a team of compassionate and caring hosts on Death Matters Live program.
For…”if for just one moment in time, the pain of suffering, despair or sorrow eased or the program has touched one person’s life… then one goal reached”.

Sharon Simpson spends her days providing leadership and service to elderly seniors at BC’s largest campus of care, Menno Place, in Abbotsford, BC. More than 700 seniors live on the campus receiving levels of support, including medical, spiritual, dietary, recreational and relational support. Sharon draws strength and wisdom from this amazing group of elders – most of whom are in their 80’s and 90’s. It’s no surprise to these seniors that they are coming to the end of their time on earth. Death, dying and loss is an important part of conversations on the campus – with seniors and their families.

You can read Sharon Simpson’s articles on seniors in The Light Magazine, the Abbotsford News, The Garden Park Journal and at the BC Care Providers website.

Theme of the Show: Pet Loss
Guest: Joanna Woronchak, Until We Meet Again Pet Memorial Center
Lead Host: Jeffrey Young

Until We Meet Again Pet Memorial Center
How do you define ‘family’? For many of us, the vision of “family” simply must include our pets. And most of us are committed to caring for these companions as well as we care for the human members of our family.

The passing of a beloved pet brings the need to make two very important decisions. The first involves letting go, where you choose pet cremation or burial–a decision which can hinge on any number of practical factors. The second involves creating the opportunity to say “goodbye” in a meaningful way.

Guest: Sarah Kerr, Soul Passages
Lead Host: Stephen Garrett

Soul Passages
I love what I do, and I bring an open-hearted practicality to it. I join my clients in some very intimate and personal experiences, and I do so with respect, humility, compassion, and awe. I offer a calm and stable presence in what are often intense emotional situations. I know when to be serious, and when laughter is the medicine that’s needed. I am deeply committed to individual and community healing.
